Drinking coconuts are young coconuts, harvested when the husk is still green, at about 6 to 9 month old. The shell, inside the husk is white, and much thinner than that of a mature, brown coconut.
A drinking coconut contains around 2 cups of clear, sweet water, often with a slight fizz to it. Coconut water contains a high levels of electrolytes – potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, and calcium, nature’s isotonic beverage!
The shell is lined with a thin layer of soft, jelly-like meat, that can easily be scooped out. It can be mixed with the coconut water, added to salads and desserts, or eaten straight from the shell.
